The Basics of Dental Fillings

Fillings are one of the most common dental treatments, and they’re used to treat tooth decay (cavities). More than 175 million fillings are performed every year in the United States alone.

Dental fillings consist of a filling material, such as metal amalgam or dental resin, which is used to “fill” and restore your tooth once decayed enamel has been removed. By removing the decayed material and replacing it with an inert substance, we can prevent the progression of the cavity, and restore the natural appearance and function of your tooth.

What to Expect From The Dental Filling Process

The filling process takes only one appointment at Jackson Family Dentistry. First, we will begin by cleaning and numbing your mouth. If you want, you can also be sedated. Next one, our trained doctors will use a dental drill to remove any decayed and damaged enamel surrounding your cavity.

Once the tooth has been prepared and the cavity has been cleaned, we will begin the filling placement process. He will place the filling material directly into your tooth, and begin shaping and trimming it until it looks just like a natural part of your tooth. Then, your bite will be checked and your filling will be adjusted until it fits perfectly. This completes the procedure.

We Offer Composite Fillings for a Brighter Smile

At our office, we specialize in composite fillings. Unlike metal amalgam fillings, composite fillings contain no mercury or any other metals. They are made of a special blend of glass and dental resin.

Composite fillings look and feel more natural, and also have a strong hold and usually require less tooth preparation, compared to metal fillings. Contact us to schedule an appointment, and learn more about our tooth-colored fillings.

Dental Fillings Frequently Asked Questions

What are the Signs I need a filling?

You only need a filling if you have a cavity. The most common signs of a cavity include visible brown or dark staining/discoloration on the surface of your tooth. You may also notice visible pitting or holes in your tooth, which definitely indicate a serious cavity.

Cavities can also cause heightened tooth sensitivity. If one of your teeth is more sensitive to heat, cold and pressure than the others, it may have a cavity. Extremely deep cavities may even cause a toothache. If you recognize any of these signs, you should come into Jackson Family Dentistry for an appointment right away.
