Adjustments
Dentures are a great option if you need to restore your smile while waiting to get a dental implant, or if dental implants are not the right option for you. There are a few different types of dentures available.
Partial dentures use a metal and plastic framework, which holds one or more false teeth. They clip to your remaining healthy teeth to stay in place, and are ideal if you’ve only lost a few of your natural teeth.
Full dentures are only used if you’ve lost most or all of your teeth, because all remaining teeth need to be extracted before they can be fitted to your gums. Using an acrylic base and high-quality, realistic false teeth, dentures restore your smile and your bite.
Unlike traditional dentures, these dentures are attached to a series of 4-6 full-arch dental implants and are locked in place, so they never move or shift. They also support and strengthen your jaw bone, making them the best choice if you need to restore the upper, lower, or both arches of your mouth.
Dentures are often a good option if you have lost one or more teeth, but are not yet ready to have a dental implant at Jackson Family Dentistry. Partial dentures are particularly popular for this. A partial denture lets you maintain your appearance and keeps the proper spacing between your teeth while you prepare for an implant, streamlining the process. In some cases, dentures may be the best option for your oral health needs. For example, if you have experienced extensive bone loss after losing your teeth, dental implants may not work for you, and dentures may be a better option. Dentures are also a cheaper alternative to dental implants, so if you do not have the budget for implants, they may be preferable, in some cases.
Dentures let you restore your smile and your bite quickly, often within just 2-3 weeks. This makes them faster than some alternative treatments like dental implants. They are also very affordable and typically are covered by dental insurance. Your dentures also will let you eat and speak normally, and will help keep your teeth in the proper position and eliminate teeth shifting if you’ve lost more than one tooth. However, they are not always the best long-term solution. Dentures usually only last 5 years, and they do not stimulate or strengthen your jaw bone, so your jaw may become weak over time, resulting in changes in your facial structure and appearance.
While dentures are a good temporary solution, patients with healthy mouths may want to explore dental implants and full-arch, implant-supported dentures. Implants last much longer and help protect the jaw bone, and they never shift or move, so they may be a better option. Contact Jackson Family Dentistry today to schedule a consultation and learn more.
