Whether you have a minor to severe case of dental anxiety or a strong gag reflex, sedation can help keep you comfortable.
We offer many different options to meet the varying needs of each patient and deliver exceptional care.
Sedation is available to treat more than just anxiety. It can minimize gag reflexes, make it easier to sit still, and reduce pain.
“Laughing gas” is one of the most commonly used methods of sedation dentistry. This sedative is inhaled through a comfortable mask that fits over your nose during treatment and is typically used to treat minor levels of dental anxiety. The effects include a euphoric, giddy feeling, though you will still be responsive during your procedure. One of the biggest benefits of laughing gas is that the effects wear off very quickly after treatment, which means that you are able to drive yourself home after your appointment and enjoy the rest of your day as your normally would.
Oral conscious sedation is taken in pill form about an hour before your treatment is scheduled to begin. This medication will make you feel groggy and calm, and you might even fall asleep during your procedure. If you experience moderate levels of dental anxiety or you will be undergoing an invasive procedure, oral conscious sedation may be a good option for you. If you choose oral conscious sedation, you cannot drive yourself home after your appointment since the effects don’t wear off immediately. Make sure to arrange a ride home from our office!
This sedation option is typically reserved for patients who will be undergoing surgery or extensive treatment. If you are visiting to remove an impacted wisdom tooth, IV sedation will most likely be used during your procedure. IV sedation and general anesthesia are closely monitored throughout your procedure to ensure that you receive the proper dosage at all times to keep you comfortable. You won't be fully asleep during your procedure, but the sedative will make you feel very groggy. If this sedation option is right for you, you will also need to arrange for a ride home from your appointment since it can take a few hours for the effects to fully subside.
Before your appointment, your Jackson Dentist will go over all of your options and preferences to help you decide which sedation option will work best for you. If you have minor anxiety, laughing gas is typically recommended. If you will be undergoing surgery or you have higher levels of anxiety, oral conscious sedation or IV sedation may be a better choice. We will always keep you well-informed to help you make the best decisions for your care.
If you are interested in sedation options, one of our dentists will discuss your needs and ask you basic questions about your general health to determine whether you are a good candidate. Typically, patients who are in good overall health are able to receive sedation without any issues.
